The Coniston ORBL (Orange Ball of Light) of May 9th 2009

May 2009 – Cumbrian UFO sighting continue

Subsequent to the Cumbrian Earthquake (Tuesday 28th April a 3.7 magnitude earth tremor hit Cumbria) things went a little quiet on the Cumbrian UFO front. However, reports are once again starting to trickle in to our office.

Richard A Roworth, who is a professional photographer, alerted NWUR to the following:

Richard told Pat Regan, NWUR Founder what he witnessed with others on Saturday May 9th 2009.

“Myself, my girlfriend and 3 other people saw an orange ball in the sky at about midnight on Saturday 9th may around midnight. I was searching the local newspaper websites to see if anyone else had seen it when I came across your Northwest UFO website (via Whitehaven Times I think). I have a passing interest in astronomy and usually look at the sky when it is clear.  At first I thought it was a large meteor and I shouted at my Girlfriend to look at it.  I then realised that it was moving too slow to be a meteor and it didn't have a tail.  I then shouted at a group of 3 people (I don't know them so can't contact them) to have a look as it was really strange.”

Richard added:

“The orange ball was about as bright as a street light and travelled NNW - NNE being visible for about 45 seconds to a minute.  It seemed to make a couple of erratic changes in direction before it faded very fast as if it had accelerated away. I am a professional photographer (my girlfriend is a teacher) and I always thought if I ever saw something like this I would get a clear shot of it.  Unfortunately It wasn't possible to photograph it due to the surprise factor!”

The UFO Hunters team in the States previously contacted NWUR Founder, Pat Regan, and expressed interest in the local Orange Ball phenomena.

Dave Pavoni producer stated that the team call the latest sightings "ORBLs" – known as Orange Balls of Light – "Hynek investigated them and they are a known UFO term” added Mr Pavoni.

Pat Regan added:

“Was the Coniston UFO simply a Chinese lantern released from some celebration, as sceptics may claim? Was it some unspecified military test flight vehicle or perhaps some type of natural phenomena such as gas waves affecting the atmosphere or space debris?   Was it linked to earlier ORBL sightings seen prior to the tremor of 28th April last? If not was it of an extraterrestrial nature so far unknown. Is the MoD aware of this issue and if so can we expect to see them undertake an investigation into radar reports etc to define the origin of this and other Cumbrian object?”

Did anyone else see this object, if so then please let us know.

NB. Coniston in the Lake District has featured before as a sight for strange objects. On March 21st 2009 at about 6:30pm five witnesses saw an orange light moving erratically across the sky. Moreover, on the 15 February 1954 Stephen Derbyshire, then 14 years old, photographed a UFO on the slopes of the Old Man of Coniston, above Coniston Village. The picture was indistinct but the case became archetypal of UFO literature of that particular time.
