North West UFO Research

Press release 2008

Has the Ministry of Defence failed to properly investigate a potential hazard to Red Arrows aircraft crews and Southport crowds at Air Show 2008?

MoD– are they ‘really’ doing the job we pay them for?

MoD – action for public benefit or officialised apathy?

The MoD is currently releasing files into the public domain on the UFO axis and this would seem to display a great deal of official ‘openness’ from this agency. However, ‘behind’ the scenes public calls to the MoD for proper investigations into unexplained flying objects frequently fall on deaf ears.

The following is but one small example of how the MoD may be slipping into a sea of authoritarian intransigence and leaving our county wide open to impending terrorist infiltration etc.

On the afternoon of 7th September 2008, Southport’s Pagan author, Pat Regan, took a photograph of two Red Arrows jets at the local Southport Air Show. Later on he noticed a bizarre shape in the image that was apparently flying perilously close to one of the high-speeding aircraft. Pat was naturally concerned and subsequently informed ex-MOD UFO expert Nick Pope about this occurrence. Without delay, Nick explained to Pat that although he did not know ‘what’ the unidentified object actually was it constituted a serious air safety issue as it was so close to the jets and also the crowds of onlookers below.

Pat did as Nick had suggested (10th September 2008) and was told by an MOD telephone assistant that they didn’t really deal with this sort of thing and that it was a strange issue. Although their assistant was courteous Pat was astonished by the lack of concern for this conspicuous air safety affair. The MoD assistant suggested for Pat to inform the RAF press office.

Pat rang the RAF as instructed, yet was greeted with an answer phone. Pat briefly explained the situation and asked them to call him back. They never rang back.

Pat therefore wrote to the MoD, RAF and the Red Arrows and finally (23rd October 08) he received a response from the MoD regarding the incident.

The MoD told Pat that they have been advised by RAFAT (Royal Air Force Acrobatic Team) that there was nothing unusual reported by the pilots and no damage was sustained to their aircraft. No unusual circumstances were reported in their engineering logs. However, nothing was mentioned by the MoD about radar tracking or any analysis of the photographs Pat had freely provided.

Nick Pope, Ex-MoD expert of 20 years experience, ‘not’ impressed with bureaucratic response

Pat informed Nick about this somewhat lame response from the MoD. Nick stated to Pat:

“The MoD's response illustrates laziness and an inability to think outside the box.  Such a mindset would never be tolerated in business but is, sadly, commonplace in the civil service.  It's one of the reasons I resigned.  I'm virtually certain that nobody's checked the radar, nobody's analysed the photos and nobody's shown the image to the pilots.  They're simply relying on a negative (i.e. nobody reported anything at the time) and are using this an excuse for that most highly desired of civil service outcomes: NFA (no further action).”

In light of this Pat has written once again to the MoD asking for the photographs to be expertly analysed and for them to check with the RAF air staff if military and civil radar tracked anything abnormal that afternoon in the given Southport beach location.

Pat has also informed the media, yet at the time of writing this essential information, which concerns us all to a greater or lesser degree, has not yet been examined further by the press.

Should ordinary and concerned members of the public have to ‘plead’ with our UK Air Defence experts to get to the bottom of such issues - should we be forced into virtually doing their job for them by demanding that unidentified potential threats to our aircraft and residents be properly tracked and identified?
