The Workington UFO

Location: Workington, Cumbria, above the transmitter on the top of Mason Street.

Date: 1st January 2009

Time: 4 minutes past midnight

Lee Stamper, a Workington mechanical engineer in his early 30’s and his friend, John Laycock Witnessed a strange light in the sky.

Lee – who is an amateur photographer mentioned that at first he thought the light may have been a Chinese lantern. However, this was ruled out later as the light moved 'against' the offshore breeze, which was blowing at the time. Lee managed to take a photo of the mysterious light.

Lee kindly sent his photo of the UFO to Pat Regan of North West UFO Research. The picture was taken with Lee’s Canon 40D with a 17-85mm lens. Lee also uploaded his shot on Flickr.com yet the time of the shot recorded on that website is an hour fast for some reason.

The UFO, which was moving against the wind,  can clearly be seen in the top right hand corner of Lee's dramatic shot

NWUR zoomed in on and lightened Lee's picture to show the UFO more clearly

The picture was a 2.5 second exposure, which makes the object appear longer than it actually was according to Lee.

Lee stated:

“We first noticed the light up above the transmitter on the top of Mason street in the town. It took a good minute or so to travel over my parents house and over to us. As you can see from the picture, the object was too high to make out any features or structure. There was no noise and it seemed to turn in a 90 degree angle instantly right above us.. So this rules out a balloon or lantern for me. The fact we watched it for over a minute, possibly two, rules out conventional aircraft as the light was not flashing and it was going too slow for any plane I have seen and you would have thought you would have heard it if it was a helicopter. It kinda confused me.........”

There was a third know witness to this sighting as Lee tells us that his father also spotted the light.

Did anyone else witness this object?
